After all this time I find that I am still surprised that I actually recieve the freebies that companies offer. This time I was pleasantly surprised by Tesco DVD Rental (who are actually LoveFilm.COM) who ran an offer a few months ago in which they gave you the Harry Potter Years 1-5 box set free if you took out a 14 day trial. You had no obligation to continue with the trial after the 14 days and regardless whether you stayed or cancelled you got to keep the Harry Potter Years 1-5 box set.

Having seen the price of these Harry Potter Years 1-5 box sets in the high street I was extremely scheptical but never-the-less I tried it anyway as I was bored with what was on Sky Television and a few good movies sounded just like what I was needing.

At the end of the 14 days I cancelled my trial and there was even an option during the cancellation process for “I only signed up for the free gift” so clearly this is not uncommon. I waited about a month before I received a letter from Tesco DVD Rental which advised me they had ran out of the Harry Potter Years 1-5 box sets due to high demand and therefore they would send me individual DVD’s instead and true to their word theses DVD’s arrived about 2 weeks later.

This was perfect timing… one less Christmas present to buy!

I have just come across a blog entry by John Lamerton titled Send Me Free Stuff which has shown me yet another way, that I would never have thought of on my own, of using your website or blog to your advantage. The basic idea behind this was to make a blind request for free stuff to anyone who would be willing to send it to him in return for him writing a blog entry about the product they he received.

Why would anyone send him free stuff? Every company that has their own website is competing against everyone else for search engine rankings… the higher the rankings the more traffic, more sales, more comissions etc but one factor in gaining a better search engine ranking is obtaining backlinks. The company could make their money back many times over if they send out a freebie to someone who then writes about it on a busy blog.

I’m not sure if this would still work now or not… would a high profile blogger be happy with including product advertisements within their blog just for the sake of a few freebies or would they prefer to just stick to their topic of choice?

I just wanted to tell everyone a little about a service we’ve been using lately called Freecycle. With Freecycle you can advertise items which you are planning on putting out (i.e. old clothes, tv, dvd player etc) and allow other people to receive these items and benefit from them… after all why put something in the bin if someone else can use it?

The thing to remember with this service is that it is operated voluntarily by people within your local community and all the items listed must be offered for free, with no strings attached! If you want to offer your old couch because you have a new one arriving next week then you are free to do so, but you cannot ask for any compensation, finanical or otherwise and all offers are made on the assumption that the recipient collects the item unless other arrangements are agreed between yourselves.

We have received a number of items which we have benefitted from using this services, and equally we have re-offered these items or other items when we have had no further use for them.

With New Year just a couple of days away why not make it your New Years resolution to Freecycle your unwanted stuff before you throw it out.
